The ABC's of Diabetic Medicine

The ABC's of Diabetic Medicine

The last diabetes meeting on 5/16 was eye care, foot care, and dental care: why are these important?  People with diabetes are at a higher risk of developing other health problems such as kidney damage, nerve damage, and vision loss.  If you understand the risks, you can take the steps to lower your chance of diabetes related complications.  We call these the ABC's of diabetes:

A1c: goal is to keep this under 7%.
Blood pressure: goal is to keep BP controlled and under 140/90.
Cholesterol/complications: Managing your cholesterol and keeping it controlled with either diet, exercise, or medications.
Smoking: Don't smoke.  If you do, you should quit.

By controlling your diabetes, blood pressure, and cholesterol, you can decrease your risk for stroke, heart attack, and other circulation problems.  Our eyes, mouth, and feet can be some of the first warning signs.  Have your yearly eye exam, dental visits every 6 months, and check your feet daily.  Let your healthcare team know at the first sign of changes.
